Psychotherapy & counselling with Caroline Hounsell at Brighton and Hove Therapies

PSYCHOTHERAPY with CAROLINE HOUNSELL
Mental health influences how we think and feel about ourselves and others and how we interpret events. It affects our capacity to learn, to communicate and to form, sustain and end relationships. It also influences our ability to cope with change, transition and life events: having a baby, moving house, experiencing bereavement. (Friedli 2004)
One person in four will experience some form of mental health problems in any year. (Goldberg 1991)

WHY PSYCHOTHERAPY & COUNSELLING?

You will be offered a safe, non-judgemental and completely confidential environment away from your day-to-day life where you will be given the opportunity to address areas of concern, understand
yourself, your issues and consider options for change.

Caroline can either work towards an agreed goal from the start or choose to explore issues as they arise with regular reviews.

Caroline works with individuals, couples, families and groups to help them overcome a range of psychological and emotional concerns using counselling and psychotherapy.  Throughout the whole process, her clients’ role is one of active participation in their own healing via counselling and psychotherapy.

It is not the things in themselves that trouble us, but the opinions we have about these things. (Epictetus 55 -135 AD)

HOW IT WORKS
Using person centred treatment plans and a variety of non-medical based counselling procedures, your experience will be unique to you but will include:
  • Addressing your thought processes, feelings and behavioural patterns
  • Understanding your inner conflicts
  • Finding new ways to deal with and alleviate your distress

Taking the whole person into consideration, Caroline believes by working in a positive environment, we can all fulfil our potential in the world.

Usually, one or more 50 minute sessions of counselling/psychotherapy a week are recommended.  During this time your needs will be considered and you may decide to work on a specific goal or more general issues.  These will be explored and our relationship will be developed into a counselling partnership.

ABOUT CAROLINE
As a Member of the BACP (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists), she runs a private psychotherapy practice in various locations throughout Sussex.  Although her work is based on Person Centred Psychotherapy, she takes an holistic and integrative view with her clients, allowing her to use a mixture of approaches according to her client’s needs.  Caroline also has regular professional supervision and support to enable her to work more effectively with her clients and keep abreast of developments in theory and research.

She is also an important member of the National Training Group responsible for devising and delivering two of today’s most highly regarded mental health courses, which are:- ASIST (Applied Suicide Awareness Skills Training) and MHFA (Mental Health First Aid).

Caroline spent a number of years working with children and adults as a careers consultant and counsellor.  During this period, she often worked with young people and young adults, who were either at risk or dealing with substantial stress and trauma.  This led to her interest in the process of decision making and the life factors that influence an individual’s views.  She observed that clients who concentrated their energies in a positive direction were more likely to flourish.

Today she is a strong believer in preventative work, empowering people to focus on caring for themselves, rather than waiting for a crisis.  She is also a strong advocate for reducing the stigma that still surrounds mental health.

TESTIMONIALS
"I first went to see Caroline when I had a breakdown and my doctor advised me to have counselling.  During the whole time I have been going I have always felt tremendously supported and cared for. I feel we have worked together at a pace that I have felt safe and comfortable with, in both slowly getting me off the anti depressants I was taking and helping me to take the opportunity to find the positives that are also present but so hard to see during very painful and difficult times and in so helping me become a stronger more self aware person.  I can only encourage anyone in a similar situation to go and receive the help from Caroline that I have had and to quote Caroline 'trust in the process'.” J.B, London

“Thanks to Caroline Hounsell, I have gained a clear understanding of what my strengths are and been able to forge ahead in a new direction with confidence.” D.M, London

“I've been seeing Caroline for over a year now and I feel I've overcome a lot since seeing her. I strongly believe that if it wasn't for seeing Caroline I wouldn't have come as far as I have” D.S, Brighton

“I found myself on a precipice in 2003; with a negative view of all aspects of my life and the people in it I was speeding towards isolation and depression and the consequences both hold.  Caroline re- introduced me to the light and beauty which had always surrounded me but to which I had become blind. The trust and understanding emanating from our counselling sessions has bled into all aspects of a life which is now positive, productive and downright wonderful.” J.S.L, Brighton
